Fixed, Editable, and Reflowable
The three formats embody different document models. PDF describes a fixed page: it records the precise placement of text, fonts, and graphics so the page renders identically everywhere, much like a digital sheet of paper.[1][2] DOCX (Office Open XML) is an editable format: it is a ZIP package of XML parts describing content and formatting separately, designed for ongoing authoring.[3][4] EPUB is reflowable: it packages XHTML and CSS so text re-wraps to fit any screen size.[5][6]
Internal Structure
Both DOCX and EPUB are ZIP archives of structured markup, which makes their content machine-readable and separable from presentation.[4][6] EPUB, in particular, is essentially a packaged website: XHTML content documents styled by CSS. PDF, by contrast, embeds fonts and a coordinate-based content stream so layout never shifts, but this rigidity makes editing and reflowing on small screens difficult.[1]
Layout Versus Adaptability
The central trade-off is between guaranteed appearance and adaptability. A PDF looks the same on every device and prints exactly, but cannot adapt its layout to a small screen without zooming and panning.[2] An EPUB adapts to any screen and lets the reader change font and size, but its exact appearance varies by reading app. A DOCX is meant to be changed, so its rendering can differ between word processors and is not intended as a final, fixed form.[5]
Standardization
PDF is standardized as ISO 32000, with the PDF/A subset defined for long-term archiving.[1][2] DOCX is standardized as ECMA-376 and ISO/IEC 29500 (Office Open XML).[3] EPUB is a standard of the W3C.[5][6] All three are open, documented formats supported by multiple independent applications.
Applications
PDF is used for final-form documents, contracts, forms, and print, where exact layout and fidelity must be guaranteed.[2] DOCX is used for collaborative writing and revision. EPUB is used for ebooks and long-form reading, where reflowing text to the reader's device and adjustable typography are essential.[5] Documents commonly move between them: authored in DOCX, exported to PDF for distribution or to EPUB for reading.
