Help and answers

How FileFormer works, what it supports, and how it keeps your files private. Everything runs in your browser, with no account and no uploads.

About FileFormer

FileFormer is a web-based platform for converting, compressing, and editing files across images, video, audio, documents, and archives. It is built and maintained by Emir Baycan through Kalenux Bilisim Hizmetleri, and it is completely free: there are no hidden costs, no premium tiers, and no subscription plans.

What sets it apart from most converters is that the work happens on your own device rather than on a server. There is no sign-up, nothing to install, and no waiting in a queue. Because every tool runs in your browser, simple operations such as image edits finish almost instantly, and there are no file size limits imposed by a server: the practical ceiling is your own device's memory. The platform is available in nine languages, including English, Turkish, Arabic, German, and more.

How conversion works

Most tools run entirely in your web browser. When you select or drop a file, your browser reads it into local memory, performs the conversion or compression using your own processor, and hands the finished file straight back to you as a download. There is no server step in between, which is why nothing needs to be uploaded.

Converting a file takes four simple steps: choose your tool, add the file, pick any options such as quality or target format, and download the result. Batch conversion is supported, so you can add several files and convert them together to the same format in one pass. Quality settings vary by type: image compressors let you set a quality percentage, while other tools expose the options that matter for that format.

Two limits are worth knowing. DRM-protected files, such as purchased movies, copy-protected music, or locked ebooks, cannot be converted, because the protection prevents the file from being read. And if a conversion fails, you will see an error explaining why; your original file is never modified, so nothing is lost and you can simply try again.

Formats and results

The platform covers a wide range of formats organised into converter categories for images, video, audio, documents, presentations, and archives. Conversions run within the same media category: image to image, video to video, audio to audio, and so on, since a picture cannot become a sound file.

Choosing the right output format comes down to three questions: will the recipient's device or software support it, how important is quality, and how much does file size matter? As a rough guide, use widely-supported formats such as JPG, MP4, or PDF for sharing, and lossless formats such as PNG or FLAC when you need to preserve every detail.

Quality depends on the source file and the target format. Lossless-to-lossless conversions preserve everything, while converting to a lossy format trades some detail for a smaller file. Once a conversion finishes, the result is generated locally and downloaded directly to your device, with no copy left on any server.

Privacy and security

Privacy is a design principle here, not an afterthought. Because processing happens entirely in your browser, your files never reach our servers at all: we cannot store, analyze, or reuse them, because they never leave your device. That gives you full control over your own data.

Our website infrastructure is hosted in EU-based data centres, but your files never travel there. Website traffic uses TLS 1.3 encryption with forward secrecy, and since your files stay local, there is nothing about them for us to encrypt, log, or retain. This model aligns naturally with GDPR principles such as data minimisation, because we collect almost nothing in the first place.

Devices and troubleshooting

FileFormer works on any modern device and browser, including recent versions of Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS. Nothing needs to be installed: no desktop software, no browser plugins, and no extensions. The interface is fully responsive and works well on phones and tablets with touch.

Because the tools run in your browser rather than streaming from a server, you do not need a fast connection: once the page has loaded, the conversion itself happens locally. If a file will not process, the usual causes are a corrupted source file or a browser extension interfering with the page. If something goes wrong, try a different browser or disabling extensions, and if the problem persists, get in touch.

Support and usage

No account is ever required. The platform works immediately, with no email, sign-up, or payment needed to use any tool. There are also no restrictions on how you use your converted, compressed, or edited files, including commercial use: the result is yours.

For help, feature ideas, or format requests, email editorial@fileformer.com. When reporting a problem, it helps to describe the issue and mention the file type and format you were working with, so we can reproduce it quickly.
