EPUB is handled by epub.js, which renders the publisher's own styling and chapter structure. MOBI, AZW3 and FB2 are parsed by the reader itself. PDF is rendered page by page with pdf.js, and the chapter list is built from the document's own bookmarks where it has them.

Nothing is uploaded

Your book is opened and rendered locally in the browser. No file is sent to a server, which is why the reader keeps working even if you go offline after the page has loaded.

Kindle books and DRM

MOBI and AZW3 files open directly, including the ones your own converter produces. Books bought from the Kindle Store are usually protected by DRM, and those cannot be opened here or anywhere else without the retailer's permission. If a book is protected, the reader will tell you rather than failing silently.

Reading a PDF

A PDF has a fixed layout, so the text cannot reflow the way it does in an EPUB. The font size slider zooms the page instead, and the light, sepia and dark themes are applied as a filter over the rendered page. Chapter navigation uses the bookmarks the PDF was saved with; if it has none, you get a page list.

A note on FB2 chapter names

FB2 books store chapter names in a title element. Some converters, including Calibre, export chapters without one and put the heading in the body text instead. When that happens the reader falls back to numbered chapters, so navigation still works even though the names are not available.
