What is it?

PPT is the binary file format used by Microsoft PowerPoint from version 1.0 in 1987 through PowerPoint 2003. PPT files store presentation slides including text, images, shapes, animations, slide transitions, embedded media, and speaker notes in a proprietary binary structure. The format was the standard for business presentations for nearly two decades and is still widely encountered in corporate and institutional environments.

In 2007 Microsoft replaced PPT as the default format with PPTX, based on the Office Open XML standard. PPTX files are smaller, easier to edit programmatically, and support modern PowerPoint features. PPT files continue to be used for compatibility with older software and existing presentation libraries. All current versions of PowerPoint, LibreOffice Impress, Google Slides, and Keynote can open PPT files.

How to open a PPT file

PPT files, created by Microsoft PowerPoint, are widely used for presentations across various domains. Software options for working with PPT can be categorized into professional tools, free/open-source alternatives, browser-based applications, and built-in solutions. Professional tools like Microsoft PowerPoint offer extensive features for corporate users, while free/open-source options cater to budget-conscious individuals or organizations. Browser-based apps provide flexibility and accessibility, and built-in solutions are often integrated into operating systems or productivity suites.

When choosing software for PPT, key decision factors include feature fidelity, the distinction between editing and viewing capabilities, cost models, and platform compatibility. Users should consider whether they need advanced editing features or simple viewing options, as well as the potential need for exporting presentations to other formats. In some cases, converting PPT files to a different format may be more beneficial, especially if the target software does not fully support PPT features.
