What is it?
TTF (TrueType Font) is a scalable outline font format originally developed by Apple in the late 1980s and shipped with Mac System 7 in 1991. It was created as an alternative to Adobe's PostScript Type 1 fonts and was later licensed to Microsoft, which made it a standard font format in Windows.
Rather than storing fixed bitmaps, a TrueType font describes each glyph as a set of outlines made from straight lines and quadratic Bezier curves. These outlines can be scaled to any size and rendered (rasterized) on screen or in print, with optional 'hinting' instructions that improve clarity at small sizes.
