What is it?

TTF (TrueType Font) is a scalable outline font format originally developed by Apple in the late 1980s and shipped with Mac System 7 in 1991. It was created as an alternative to Adobe's PostScript Type 1 fonts and was later licensed to Microsoft, which made it a standard font format in Windows.

Rather than storing fixed bitmaps, a TrueType font describes each glyph as a set of outlines made from straight lines and quadratic Bezier curves. These outlines can be scaled to any size and rendered (rasterized) on screen or in print, with optional 'hinting' instructions that improve clarity at small sizes.

Pros & Cons

Advantages

Skalierbar in jeder Größe

Glyphs are stored as mathematical outlines, so text stays sharp at any point size without separate bitmap files.

Breite Kompatibilität

TrueType is supported natively by virtually every modern operating system and application, making TTF one of the most portable font formats.

Detailliertes Hinting

TrueType's instruction set lets font authors fine-tune how glyphs snap to the pixel grid for crisp rendering at small sizes.

Offen, gut dokumentiert

Apple and Microsoft publish detailed specifications, allowing wide tooling and library support.

Disadvantages

Größer als Webformate

TTF files are uncompressed, so they are larger than WOFF/WOFF2 and less ideal for delivery over the web.

Begrenzte fortgeschrittene Typografie

Plain TrueType lacks some of the advanced layout features that OpenType's later additions provide unless extended.

Keine integrierte Kompression

Unlike web font wrappers, TTF stores font data without compression, increasing download size.

When to Use It

TrueType fonts are used wherever scalable, broadly compatible typefaces are needed.

Betriebssystemschriften

Windows, macOS, and Linux ship many of their core interface and document fonts as TrueType files.

Büro- und Druckdokumente

Word processors and design tools rely on TTF for consistent rendering across screen and print.

Web-Einbettung (mit @font-face)

TTF can be referenced via CSS @font-face, though compressed WOFF2 is preferred for production sites.

How to open a TTF file

Software for working with TTF files can be categorized into professional design tools, free/open-source applications, browser-based utilities, and built-in system tools. Professional tools like Adobe Illustrator cater to graphic designers needing advanced features, while open-source options like FontForge appeal to developers and hobbyists. Browser-based tools provide quick access without installation, and built-in tools are suitable for basic viewing and installation of fonts.

When choosing software for TTF files, important factors include feature fidelity, whether the tool is for editing or viewing, cost, platform compatibility, and export capabilities. Users should consider if they need extensive editing features or simple viewing, as well as whether they require cross-platform support. In some cases, converting TTF to other formats may be necessary for compatibility with specific applications.
