What is it?

HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding), also known as H.265, is a video compression standard developed by the Joint Collaborative Team on Video Coding and finalized in 2013. It is the successor to H.264 (AVC) and delivers approximately 50% better compression efficiency, meaning a HEVC video at the same visual quality takes up roughly half the file size of the equivalent H.264 video. This efficiency makes HEVC the dominant standard for 4K and 8K video streaming.

HEVC achieves its compression gains through larger and more flexible coding units (up to 64x64 pixels instead of H.264's 16x16), improved motion compensation, and better intra-frame prediction. These improvements are computationally expensive to encode but decode efficiently on modern hardware with dedicated HEVC acceleration.
