What is it?
Xvid is an open-source video codec that compresses video using the MPEG-4 Advanced Simple Profile (ASP) standard. It is important to note that Xvid is a codec, not a file format or container: video it produces is MPEG-4 ASP and is most commonly stored inside AVI files.
Xvid originated in 2001 when developers forked the last open-source version of the OpenDivX project after that codebase was closed.
