What is it?

How to open a PNG file

PNG files are widely used for their lossless compression and support for transparency, making them popular among graphic designers, web developers, and photographers. Software for handling PNG files can be categorized into professional tools, free/open-source applications, browser-based editors, and built-in operating system utilities. Professional tools are suited for users needing advanced editing capabilities, while free/open-source options are ideal for those on a budget. Browser-based tools offer convenience and accessibility, and built-in utilities provide quick viewing and basic editing without additional installations.

When choosing software for PNG specifically, several factors come into play, including feature fidelity, whether the focus is on editing or viewing, and the cost model. Users should consider the platform compatibility, as some applications are exclusive to certain operating systems. Additionally, understanding export needs is crucial, as some tools may limit output formats, while others may offer extensive conversion options. In cases where editing is not required, lightweight viewers may suffice, while more complex tasks may necessitate robust editing software.
