About This Tool
This tool adds VAT (value-added tax) to a net price or extracts the VAT already included in a gross price. Adding VAT is a multiplication by one plus the rate; removing it is a division by that same factor, which is not the same as simply subtracting the rate from the gross amount, a common mistake.
For example, removing 20% VAT from a gross figure means dividing by 1.20, not taking off 20%, because the 20% was applied to the smaller net amount. The calculator handles both directions and shows the net, the tax, and the gross separately so the numbers reconcile.
The direction of the calculation is where mistakes happen: adding tax to a net price and extracting tax from a gross price are different operations, and removing a rate is not the same as subtracting it. Keeping the net, tax, and gross figures visible together lets you check that they reconcile.
