Which Format Should You Convert To?
Six answers taken straight from the measurements above.
5% of PNG, 43.8 dB
The smallest file in the test, about 5% of the PNG. Its 43.8 dB is a touch below JPEG (higher dB is closer to the original), but the size saving is large and every current browser supports it.
8% of PNG, 51.3 dB
Opens on anything with a screen, which is reason enough on its own. It measured 51.3 dB, the most accurate lossy result here, for a file about 1.6 times the size of the WEBP.
Lossless, pixel-identical
The only widely supported lossless format with an alpha channel. Keeps every pixel exactly, so use it for logos, screenshots and anything with a transparent background rather than for photographs.
Lossless, ~108% of PNG
Measured 108% of the PNG, so it is the largest output here, but it survives repeated re-saving without compounding loss. Choose it when the file is a master you will edit again.
Multi-resolution container
Windows and browsers expect ICO for favicons and application icons. The converter builds the header manually and packs the sizes a favicon needs, which a plain rename cannot do.
32% of PNG but only 20.9 dB
A useful negative result. GIF is capped at 256 colours, so it measured 20.9 dB, far below every other format here, while producing a file 1.6x larger than WEBP. Use it only for simple animation.

Measured with FFmpeg 7.1 on three real photographs (portrait, landscape, mixed) converted to lossless PNG first, then to each format. Percentages are output size against that PNG; figures are the average across the three. Quality is PSNR against the source: lossless formats are pixel-identical. Real photographs compress differently from synthetic test patterns, so these use actual photos.

WEBP at quality 80. It measured 6% of the PNG size here, which is the single biggest page-weight saving available.
Email & Documents
JPEG for photos, PNG for screenshots and diagrams. Both open everywhere without a plugin or a modern browser.
Logos & Graphics
PNG or SVG. Flat colour and sharp edges compress badly as JPEG and pick up visible artefacts around lines.
Print & Editing
TIFF keeps every pixel through repeated saves. Avoid lossy formats for anything that will be edited more than once.
Favicons & App Icons
ICO for Windows and browser favicons, PNG for everything else. Both handle transparency.
