What You Can Control
Four settings decide how small the image gets and how much detail survives.
Quality Preset
Fast, Normal, Maximum or Ultra. Each sets a JPEG quality level from 40% up to 95%.
Resize Dimensions
Set a target width or height to shrink the pixels themselves, which cuts size far more than quality alone.
Strip Metadata
Remove EXIF, GPS and camera data. Trims a few kilobytes and protects your privacy.
Output Format
Keep the format or convert to JPEG, PNG or WEBP. WEBP is usually the smallest for the web.
Which Preset Should You Use?
Answers taken straight from the measurements above.

Cuts the file by 67% while staying 37.5 dB from the source, which is hard to tell apart on a screen. The sweet spot for web and sharing.
-51%, 41.1 dB
Still removes 51% of the size but holds 41.1 dB, close to the original. Use it when the image will be viewed large or printed small.
-73%, 36.1 dB
The biggest saving at 73%, with visible softening on fine detail. Good for thumbnails and previews where size beats fidelity.
Far bigger savings than quality alone
A 4000px phone photo shown at 1200px wastes most of its data. Resizing to the width you actually display cuts far more than any quality setting, with no visible loss at the target size.
Smaller than JPEG from an uncompressed source
When starting from a PNG or a fresh export, WEBP produces the smallest web file at the same quality. From an already-compressed JPEG the gain is smaller, so keep JPEG if that is your source.
only -5% on an existing JPEG
On a photo that is already a JPEG, Ultra removes almost nothing (5%) because the file is already compressed. Use a lower preset, or resize, to actually save space.

Measured with FFmpeg 7.1. The sources were three real photographs already saved as JPEG, which is what people usually upload, so the reduction column shows what you would actually save on a typical file. Quality is PSNR against that source; higher is closer to the original. A brand-new photo saved from an uncompressed PNG compresses far more (often over 90%), because it has not been compressed before. It measures retained detail, not preference, and is not a substitute for viewing the result.

Best Settings by Destination
Where the image is going decides how hard you should compress.
Websites
WEBP at Normal, and resize to your display width. Page weight is the single biggest speed factor.
Email & Chat
JPEG at Fast or Normal. Most providers cap attachments, and recipients rarely need full resolution.
Social Media
JPEG at Normal. Platforms re-compress everything anyway, so there is no point uploading a huge file.
Printing
Maximum or Ultra, no resize. Print needs the detail that heavy compression throws away.
Archiving
Keep the original, or use PNG. Every lossy pass discards detail you cannot recover.
