Image and Video Resolution: Simple Definition

Resolution is the number of pixels in an image, usually written as width by height. A 1920 by 1080 image holds just over two million of them, and that count sets the ceiling on how much detail the image can possibly contain.

The number alone says less than people expect. Resolution describes quantity, not quality: a blurry photograph enlarged to 4000 pixels wide is still blurry, merely larger. Detail that was never captured cannot be added by increasing the pixel count.

Aspect ratio travels with resolution and is easy to break. 1920 by 1080 is 16:9; 1600 by 1200 is 4:3. Resizing to a target that does not share the source ratio either stretches the image or crops it, and a converter that silently chooses one of those is a converter worth checking.

Pixel Count and Aspect Ratio

Resolution states the horizontal and vertical pixel counts, and their ratio fixes the image's shape, 1920x1080 and 1280x720 both describe the 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio.[2] Because total pixels grow with the product of width and height, doubling each dimension quadruples the pixel count and the raw data required.[1] This quadrupling is why moving from 1080p to 4K (which doubles both dimensions) roughly quadruples the data and bandwidth a video needs.

The Common Resolutions

A few resolutions account for most content. 720p (1280x720) is "HD"; 1080p (1920x1080) is "Full HD" and still the most common video resolution; 4K (3840x2160, also called UHD) packs four times the pixels of 1080p; and 8K (7680x4320) four times again. For still images, phone and camera resolutions are quoted in megapixels, the total pixel count in millions, so a 12-megapixel photo contains about 12 million pixels arranged roughly 4000 by 3000.

Resolution versus Pixel Density

Resolution alone does not determine sharpness as perceived by a viewer. Pixel density, measured in pixels per inch (PPI), depends on how many pixels are packed into the physical screen or print size.[3] The same 1080p image looks crisp on a phone but coarse when stretched across a large wall display, since the pixels are spread over more area.[3] This is why print work demands high resolution (commonly 300 PPI) while web images can be much smaller, the viewing distance and physical size decide how many pixels you actually need.

Why Higher Is Not Always Better

Beyond the resolving limit of the human eye at a given viewing distance, extra pixels add file size and processing load without visible benefit.[3] Upscaling a low-resolution image to a larger pixel grid cannot recover detail that was never captured; it only interpolates new pixels from existing ones.[1] The practical takeaway is to match resolution to use: high resolution for large prints or future-proofing, lower resolution for web and email where oversized images only slow pages down without looking any better.

Understanding Resolution

The figure that connects pixels to the physical world is density, expressed in pixels or dots per inch. The same image is sharp on a screen at 100 PPI and unacceptably coarse in print, where 300 DPI is the usual expectation, which is why an image that looks fine on a monitor can print badly.

Resolution also drives size and speed non-linearly. Doubling both dimensions quadruples the pixel count, and therefore roughly quadruples the storage and the work required to process it. Serving a 4000-pixel image into a 400-pixel slot wastes bandwidth on detail the viewer will never see.

The practical rule for the web is to serve close to what is displayed, with an allowance for high-density screens. A 400-pixel slot wants roughly an 800-pixel image for a retina display, and nothing beyond that. Anything larger is bandwidth the viewer pays for and cannot perceive.
