JPG (JPEG) is the most widely used image format for digital photography, established in 1992. It employs lossy compression techniques that significantly reduce file sizes while retaining acceptable visual quality. This format is particularly effective for photographs with rich color gradients.
JPG supports 24-bit color depth, enabling a palette of over 16 million colors. The adjustable quality settings allow for compression levels from 1 to 100, where higher values preserve more detail but increase the file size. However, this compression is irreversible, as it discards data permanently.
Being the standard for digital imagery, JPG is compatible with virtually all devices and applications. Its compact size makes it suitable for web use, social media, and email, especially when quick loading and minimal storage use are needed.[1][2]
