How to Remove a Background From an Image

  1. Add your image

Drag a photo onto the drop area or click to browse and pick a file. You can select several images at once, and you can keep adding more to the list. Accepted inputs are JPEG, JPG, PNG, WebP, BMP, TIFF, and GIF files.

  2. Let the cutout run in your browser

Processing happens on your device using a background-removal model that runs locally. On the first image the model files download once, so that run takes longer; later images reuse the loaded model. A progress bar shows model loading and then the removal stage for each file.

  3. Download the transparent PNG

When a file finishes, a Download button appears next to it and the output is saved as a transparent PNG named after your original with a _no-bg suffix. With more than one image, a Download All as ZIP button collects every finished cutout in a single archive.

Inputs, Output, and How Files Are Handled

This tool always returns a transparent PNG, regardless of the format you start with. The table below summarizes what you can put in, what comes out, and how the work is carried out.

CapabilityWhat this tool does
Accepted inputsJPEG, JPG, PNG, WebP, BMP, TIFF, and GIF images
Output formatTransparent PNG with an alpha channel, one file per image
Output nameOriginal file name with a _no-bg suffix added
Where processing runsIn your browser on your own device; images are not uploaded to a server
Multiple imagesProcess several at once with a per-file Download and a Download All as ZIP option
First-run noteThe removal model downloads once on the first image, then is reused for later files

Is the Background Remover the Right Tool?

Use it for clean cutouts

Pick this tool when you need a subject isolated on transparency, such as a product on white, a portrait for a profile, or a logo lifted off its background. The output is a ready-to-place transparent PNG.

Use HEIC to JPG instead

If your file is an Apple HEIC photo and you only need a standard JPG, convert it with the HEIC to JPG tool first. This remover does not read HEIC; bring a JPEG or PNG version here if you also want the background gone.

Use Image Resizer instead

If the background is fine and you only need different dimensions, the Image Resizer changes size by width, height, or percentage without altering the subject. Resize after removal if you need both.

Use Image to PDF instead

If your goal is to gather several pictures into one document, Image to PDF combines images into a single PDF. Remove backgrounds first only if you want transparent subjects placed in the document.

Common Problems and Fixes

The first image is slow to process

The first run downloads the background-removal model before it can start. This one-time download depends on your connection, after which the model stays loaded and the next images process noticeably faster in the same session.

My file was rejected on upload

Only JPEG, JPG, PNG, WebP, BMP, TIFF, and GIF files are accepted, and the check is based on the file extension. Rename or re-export to a supported extension, and convert HEIC photos to JPG before adding them.

A file shows Failed

A failed item usually means the model could not load or the image could not be processed in the browser. Check your internet connection so the model can download, then try adding the file again, ideally one image at a time.

Edges around hair or fine detail look rough

Automatic detection works best with a clear subject, even lighting, and a simple background. If a cutout has stray edges, open the transparent PNG in an image editor for quick touch-ups, or retry with a sharper, higher-resolution source.
