~/electronic-vs-digital

A picture of your signature isn't the same as a digital signature.

This tool adds an electronic signature: your mark, placed on the page. A digital signature adds a certificate that proves who signed and locks the file. Edit the signed document below to see what each one can detect.

check_circleSigned document, unchanged
Shows intent to sign, and is accepted for most everyday agreements. It can’t prove the text wasn’t edited afterwards, so keep your own copy.
verified_userDigital signaturecertificate-based
verifiedSignature valid, document unchanged
Uses a certificate from a trusted provider. Any change breaks it, and the signer’s identity is verified. Needed for some legal and government filings.
~/what-a-digital-signature-actually-signs

Change one character, and the maths says no.

A digital signature doesn’t sign a picture of your name; it signs a fingerprint of every byte. Below, your browser made a real ECDSA P-256 key pair when the page loaded and signed the clause text. Pick an edit in the section above and the page verifies the edited text against that signature.

verifiedValid. The text matches what was signed, so crypto.subtle.verify() returns true. Only the holder of the private key could have produced this signature.
How a PDF holds the signature
/Type /Sig/Filter /Adobe.PPKLite/SubFilter /ETSI.CAdES.detached/ByteRange [0 18420 26614 3118]/Contents <45fb0e45399e72f815b8e781…000000> % 8194-byte hole/M (D:20261012234125Z)
/ByteRange lists the two stretches of the file that are hashed: everything except the hole that will hold the signature itself. A real PDF wraps the signature in a CMS container with the signer’s certificate chain (PAdES); this demo stops at the raw ECDSA step, so the download above is visibly signed but not certificate-signed.

Five things that get a signed PDF sent back.

Tick off each one as you check it. These are the reasons landlords, HR teams and banks most often return a document.

~/is-it-valid

For most everyday paperwork, yes. For some documents, no.

Laws in the US, UK and EU generally accept electronic signatures for ordinary agreements. A few document types still need wet ink, a witness or a certified digital signature. This is general information, not legal advice: check with whoever asked you to sign.
