About This Tool
This calculator estimates the running cost of an appliance from its power draw, how long it runs, and your electricity tariff. Energy use is power multiplied by time, measured in kilowatt-hours: a 1,000-watt device running for one hour uses one kilowatt-hour, the unit your bill charges by.
Because cost scales with both wattage and hours, a low-power device left on all day can cost more than a high-power device used briefly. The tool multiplies out the kilowatt-hours and applies your price per unit so you can compare appliances or estimate the impact of leaving something switched on.
Standby power is easy to overlook: many devices draw a small amount continuously even when idle, and across a year that trickle adds up. Running the numbers on an always-on device against one used briefly at high power often overturns the intuition about which one really drives your bill.
