What is AI (Adobe Illustrator)?

AI is Adobe Illustrator's native vector file format. It stores vector graphics as mathematical paths rather than pixels, allowing infinite scaling without quality loss.

AI files preserve all the layers, paths, text, gradients, and effects of an Illustrator document. Like PSD for raster graphics, AI is the standard for vector design work.

How AI Files Work

AI is the native format of Adobe Illustrator, and it is fundamentally a vector format. Instead of storing a grid of pixels the way a JPEG or PNG does, an AI file describes artwork as mathematical objects: paths defined by anchor points and curves, along with their strokes, fills, and effects. Because the picture is stored as instructions rather than dots, it can be scaled to any size, from a business card to a billboard, and stay perfectly sharp with no pixelation.

An AI file is organized around layers, groups, and editable objects. Every shape, line, and block of live text remains a separate, adjustable element, so a designer can reopen a logo months later and move an anchor point, recolor a shape, or retype a word. This is the key difference from a flattened export: the AI keeps the artwork editable, while a PNG of the same logo is just a fixed image.

Internally, the modern AI file is closely related to PDF. When Illustrator saves an AI with PDF compatibility enabled, the file actually contains a complete PDF representation of the artwork wrapped alongside Illustrator's own private data. This is why many PDF viewers and other applications can open or place an AI file even without Illustrator, and why the two formats share so much of their underlying page-description machinery.

Because it is a vector format, AI is ideal for artwork made of clean shapes and type: logos, icons, illustrations, and print layouts. It is not meant for photographs, a photo has no paths to describe, so photographic content in an AI file is simply an embedded or linked raster image that does not gain any of vector's scalability.

History and Standardization

Adobe Illustrator launched in 1987, and the AI format grew up alongside it. In its early years the format was built directly on PostScript, Adobe's page-description language, which is why AI has always been so at home in professional print workflows. Over time the internal structure shifted toward being PDF-based, which is the form it takes today.

AI is a proprietary format controlled by Adobe, and its full specification is not openly published. Because the PDF-compatible portion is standardized, other tools can often read AI files, but complete, faithful editing, including all of Illustrator's private layer and effect data, effectively requires Illustrator itself. Support elsewhere ranges from partial to good depending on the application.

Illustrator became the dominant tool for vector illustration and print design, so AI is deeply entrenched as the working format in those industries. For handoff and interchange, though, designers usually export to open or neutral formats such as SVG, PDF, or EPS rather than distributing the raw AI, keeping the AI as the master and sharing derivatives.

AI Compared to SVG, EPS, and PDF

Against SVG, the open web vector standard, the difference is ecosystem. SVG is an open, text-based format that browsers render natively, making it the right choice for web graphics and interchange, while AI is a richer working format tied to Illustrator's full feature set. Designers frequently create in AI and export to SVG for the web.

Against EPS, the older Encapsulated PostScript format, AI is the more modern successor. EPS is still widely accepted by print shops and older software as a universal vector exchange format, but it lacks many of the layer and transparency capabilities of a current AI file. AI is where the live editing happens; EPS is a legacy handoff format.

Against PDF, the relationship is unusually close because AI is internally PDF-based. The practical distinction is intent: a PDF is a finished, portable document meant to look identical everywhere, while an AI is a working design file meant to be reopened and edited. Exporting an AI to a plain PDF produces something anyone can view, at the cost of the private Illustrator data that keeps the artwork fully editable.
