What is EPS (Encapsulated PostScript)?

EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) is a legacy vector file format based on the PostScript page description language. It was the standard for print production and vector graphics exchange for decades.

While largely replaced by PDF and SVG for modern workflows, EPS remains relevant in print production, sign making, and older design workflows that have not yet migrated to newer formats.

How EPS Works

EPS stands for Encapsulated PostScript, and to understand it you first have to understand what it encapsulates. PostScript is a full page-description programming language: a PostScript file is really a program that, when run by an interpreter, draws a page. An EPS file is a single, self-contained fragment of that language, structured with strict rules so that another program can drop it into a larger document like a figure pasted into a page, rather than printing it as a standalone job.

The feature that makes encapsulation work is the bounding box. Near the top of every EPS file is a comment line, %%BoundingBox, that declares the exact rectangle the artwork occupies in points. A layout program reads that line to know how much space the graphic needs and where its edges are, so it can scale, position, and clip the figure without having to interpret the drawing commands itself. This is the essential difference from plain PostScript, which describes whole pages and does not promise to stay inside a single tidy rectangle.

Because the drawing is expressed as PostScript operators such as moveto, lineto, curveto, and fill, EPS is fundamentally a vector format: shapes are stored as mathematical paths and can be scaled to any size without losing sharpness. An EPS can also embed raster images and text, and it frequently carries a low-resolution preview image (a TIFF or WMF thumbnail) so that a layout application can show the figure on screen without running the full interpreter.

When the final document is printed or exported, the EPS is handed to a PostScript-capable device or interpreter, which executes the commands and renders the artwork at the output device's full resolution. This is why an EPS logo looks crisp whether it is printed on a business card or a billboard: the same path data is rasterized fresh at whatever resolution the target demands.

History and Standardization

PostScript itself was created by Adobe in 1984 and 1985, and it was the technology that launched desktop publishing when it was paired with the Apple LaserWriter. The Encapsulated PostScript convention grew out of the need to move individual illustrations between applications, and Adobe published a formal EPS specification defining the structured comments, the required bounding box, and the preview mechanism that distinguish EPS from ordinary PostScript.

Through the late 1980s and the 1990s, EPS became the standard interchange format for professional vector graphics and print production. Illustration programs, page-layout software, and the entire prepress industry adopted it as the reliable way to hand a logo or diagram from a designer to a typesetter. It was the format you exported to when the work absolutely had to print correctly on a commercial imagesetter.

EPS is now best understood as a mature legacy format. Its parent, PostScript, was largely superseded by PDF, which Adobe built on the same imaging model but made more robust and self-contained. Modern design workflows favor PDF, SVG, or an application's native format, and Adobe has gradually reduced EPS support in newer tools. EPS remains common where older print pipelines and archived artwork demand it, but it is rarely the first choice for new work.

EPS Compared to PDF and SVG

Against PDF, EPS is the older and narrower relative. Both descend from the same Adobe imaging model, but PDF fixed EPS's biggest weaknesses: it can hold multiple pages, embeds its own fonts reliably, does not depend on a full PostScript interpreter to preview, and is far more predictable across systems. For sending a finished graphic or document to a printer today, a PDF is almost always the safer choice, and most tools that once exported EPS now export PDF by default.

Against SVG, the difference is the environment. SVG is an open, XML-based vector format built for the web, easily edited as text and styled with CSS, while EPS is a print-oriented format tied to the PostScript language. For anything shown in a browser or a modern app, SVG is the natural fit; for legacy print production and compatibility with older prepress equipment, EPS still has a foothold.

One practical caution defines working with EPS: it depends on a PostScript interpreter to render correctly, and problems with embedded fonts, previews, or missing operators can cause a figure to display as a gray box or print incorrectly. Because of this fragility and its legacy status, the common advice is to convert EPS artwork to PDF or SVG for any new workflow and keep the original EPS only as an archival source.
