What is ISO?

ISO is a disk image file format that contains an exact, sector-by-sector copy of an optical disc such as a CD, DVD, or Blu-ray. The name comes from the ISO 9660 filesystem standard used on CD-ROMs, though ISO image files can also contain UDF (Universal Disk Format) filesystems used on DVDs and Blu-rays. ISO files capture everything on a disc: the complete filesystem, boot sectors, directory structures, file data, and all filesystem metadata.

ISO images are the standard format for distributing operating systems, large software packages, and bootable recovery media. Every major Linux distribution is distributed as an ISO file. Virtual machine software like VMware, VirtualBox, and Hyper-V can mount ISO files as virtual optical drives. Burning software like Rufus and balenaEtcher write ISO files to USB drives to create bootable installation media. Modern operating systems can mount ISO files as virtual drives without burning them.

How ISO Works

An .iso file is a disc image: a byte-for-byte copy of the contents and filesystem layout of an optical disc such as a CD or DVD. The important distinction is that an ISO is not a compressor and not a general archive like ZIP. It is a complete filesystem image, so it holds not just the files but the exact directory structure and metadata a disc would present when mounted.

The name comes from ISO 9660, the standard filesystem originally used on CD-ROMs. An ISO image stores the volume descriptors, path tables, and directory records that ISO 9660 defines, followed by the file data laid out in sectors just as they would sit on the physical disc. Because the layout mirrors real media, an ISO can be burned back to a disc and be identical to the original.

Plain ISO 9660 had strict limits on filename length and directory depth, so extensions were layered on top. Rock Ridge adds full Unix filenames and permissions, Joliet adds long Unicode names for Windows, and the El Torito extension makes an image bootable. Many modern images also use the UDF filesystem, either instead of or alongside ISO 9660, which is what DVDs and larger images rely on.

Rather than burning a disc, an ISO is now most often mounted directly by the operating system, which presents it as a read-only drive, or written to a USB stick to create bootable installation media. Because it captures an exact filesystem, an ISO is ideal for distributing operating systems and for archiving discs faithfully.

History and Standardization

ISO 9660 was published by the International Organization for Standardization in the 1980s to give CD-ROMs a single, cross-platform filesystem so a disc pressed anywhere could be read on any computer. That universality was the whole point, and it succeeded: ISO 9660 became the common language of optical media.

As media grew, the UDF (Universal Disk Format) standard was introduced to handle the larger capacities and features of DVDs, Blu-ray, and rewritable discs. Modern .iso files therefore may contain ISO 9660, UDF, or a hybrid of both, while keeping the same familiar extension.

Although optical drives have largely disappeared from new computers, the ISO format outlived the hardware because it is such a convenient container for a bootable filesystem. Linux distributions, Windows installers, and recovery tools are still routinely distributed as ISO images that users write to USB drives or mount in virtual machines.

ISO Compared to ZIP and Disc Images

The key difference from a ZIP archive is purpose. ZIP compresses and bundles files for transfer and typically shrinks them, while an ISO reproduces an entire filesystem uncompressed at its original size. You extract files from a ZIP; you mount or boot an ISO. For simply sending a folder of files, ZIP is the right tool, not ISO.

Among disc-image formats, ISO is the open, cross-platform baseline. Proprietary alternatives such as BIN/CUE, NRG, or MDF/MDS can capture extra low-level disc details like multiple tracks or copy structures, but they are less universally supported. ISO's plain filesystem image is the most portable and is what nearly every tool and operating system understands.

Because an ISO is uncompressed, it can be large, and it is best thought of as a delivery and preservation container rather than a way to save space. Its strengths are fidelity and bootability: it stores a filesystem exactly and can be turned back into working installation media, which no ordinary archive format is designed to do.
