CR2 is Canon's raw format: the sensor's readings written to disk with almost no interpretation. White balance, sharpening, contrast, and colour are recorded as settings rather than applied, which is what gives a raw file its editing latitude.

A JPEG from the same camera has all of those decisions baked in permanently. The CR2 keeps them adjustable, which is why recovering a blown sky or fixing a wrong white balance is routine from raw and often impossible from JPEG.

Proprietary and Undocumented

CR2 is Canon's format, and it is not publicly specified. Support in third-party software exists because people reverse-engineered it, and each new camera model can require new work before its files open anywhere but Canon's own tools.

That is the archival argument for DNG: publicly documented, non-proprietary, and readable by anything that implements the published spec. Converting CR2 to JPG produces a shareable image and throws away the latitude; converting to DNG keeps the latitude and removes the vendor dependency.

When working with CR2 files, consider using Canon's Digital Photo Professional or Adobe Lightroom for compatibility and optimal performance. Be aware that some software may not support the latest CR2 versions immediately after a new camera release.

When converting from CR2 to other formats like JPEG or TIFF, ensure to apply desired adjustments before export to maintain image quality. If converting to CR2 from formats like JPEG, note that you cannot recover lost data, as CR2 captures unprocessed sensor data. Always back up original CR2 files before any conversion to prevent data loss.
