GIF Graphics Interchange Format
GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) is a bitmap image format developed in 1987, famously known for its ability to support animation and transparency. It utilizes a limited color palette of 256 colors, making it ideal for simple graphics, icons, and short animations, such as memes and emojis. However, this limitation makes it less suitable for detailed images or photographs.
GIF employs lossless compression, meaning that the image quality is preserved, but the limited color range restricts its use for rich photographs. While it has been widely adopted for web graphics, it is not efficient for high-color images or complex designs that require more than 256 colors, where formats like JPG excel.
GIF's animated capabilities make it a standard choice for web animations and reaction images, providing a fun and engaging way to convey messages without the need for video. Despite its age, GIF remains a popular format, supported by virtually all web browsers and applications.[1][2]
