What a JBIG file holds

JBIG, the Joint Bi-level Image experts Group format, is a standard for compressing black-and-white images, developed to store scanned documents and faxes more efficiently than CCITT Group 3 and Group 4. It works only on bilevel data, where each pixel is either black or white.

Its efficiency comes from context-based arithmetic coding: JBIG looks at a template of neighbouring pixels to predict the value of each pixel and encodes it very compactly when the prediction holds. It also supports progressive transmission, sending a coarse image first and then refining it, which was useful for document systems on slow links.

Strengths and limits

JBIG delivers better lossless compression of bilevel images than the older fax standards, which appealed to high-volume scanning and archival systems where every kilobyte counted.

Patent issues during its key years held back widespread adoption, so today it is supported mainly by specialist libraries rather than mainstream image software. As a bilevel format it cannot represent greyscale or colour content.

JBIG Development History

JBIG was developed in the late 1980s by the Joint Bi-level Image experts Group, a collaboration between ISO/IEC and ITU-T. The standard aimed to address the inefficiencies of existing bilevel image formats, particularly CCITT Group 3 and Group 4, which struggled with high data volumes in document imaging. JBIG introduced context-based arithmetic coding, significantly improving compression ratios for black-and-white images.

The standard was finalized in 1993 and subsequently adopted in various applications, including fax machines and document management systems.
