Inside a JPS File
JPS is a JPEG Stereo file, and it stores two pictures rather than one. The left-eye and right-eye views sit side by side in a single JPEG frame, so the file is an ordinary JPEG whose image happens to be a stereo pair.
That side-by-side layout is the whole trick. A viewer that understands JPS splits the frame down the middle and shows each half to the correct eye, through a 3D display or a stereoscope, producing the illusion of depth from two flat photographs taken slightly apart.
A Format for a Passing Fad
JPS belonged to the 3D wave of the early 2010s: 3D televisions, 3D cameras, and stereoscopic displays that briefly seemed like the future. The format was a sensible way to package a stereo pair using compression every device already had.
That wave receded, and JPS went with it. The files still exist, in 3D photo libraries and from stereo cameras of the era, but almost nothing now reads them as stereo. Converting to JPG keeps one of the two views as a normal flat image and discards the depth.
Origin and Evolution of JPS
JPS was developed by the JPEG committee in the early 2000s as part of the broader push for stereoscopic imaging. The format aimed to efficiently store two images in a single file, addressing the need for a standardized way to handle stereo pairs. Using JPS Effectively

It is particularly useful for applications in 3D photography and virtual reality environments. When converting images, ensure that the source images are aligned properly to avoid misrepresentation in the stereo view. JPS files are best suited for scenarios where the end-user has access to compatible viewing software.
Common workflows involve capturing images in pairs and saving them as JPS files for easy sharing. Be aware that not all image viewers support JPS, so verify compatibility with your tools before use. When converting from JPS to other formats, keep in mind that some software may separate the stereo pair into individual images, which may not retain the original stereo effect. Always check the output to ensure fidelity to the original content.
Keeping One Eye
Because a JPS is structurally a JPEG holding two half-width images, converting to a plain JPG means choosing: keep the full side-by-side frame as a wide flat picture, or crop to one eye for a normal-looking photograph. Neither preserves the 3D effect, which needs a viewer that understands the pairing.
For anything but a stereoscopic display, the single-eye crop is usually what you want: a normal photograph at the right aspect ratio. Keep the original JPS if the depth might ever be used again, since it cannot be reconstructed from one view.
