NEF, Nikon Electronic Format, stores what the sensor recorded rather than a finished picture. The camera's white balance, picture control, and sharpening travel alongside as instructions, not as changes already applied to the pixels.

This is the whole reason photographers shoot raw. Exposure can be pushed and pulled after the fact, white balance corrected without penalty, and highlight detail recovered, because none of those decisions have been committed yet.

The Vendor Problem

Like Canon's CR2, NEF is Nikon's own and is not publicly documented. Third-party support depends on reverse engineering, and each new camera generation can break it until someone does the work again.

Converting NEF to DNG keeps the raw data and the editing latitude while moving to a format that is publicly specified and will still open in decades. Converting to JPG produces something you can send to anyone, at the cost of every adjustment you might still want to make.

NEF Evolution

NEF was introduced by Nikon in 1999 as a proprietary format for capturing raw images. It addressed the need for high-quality image data that retained all sensor information, allowing photographers to manipulate exposure and color post-capture. Its lossless compression preserves the original sensor data, making it ideal for professional work that demands extensive post-processing. NEF is particularly beneficial when shooting in challenging lighting conditions where adjustments may be necessary.

Be aware of compatibility issues when working with NEF files. Not all software supports the latest versions of NEF, especially for newer camera models. When converting to or from NEF, use dedicated software like Nikon's Capture NX or Adobe Camera Raw to maintain image integrity. Always keep backups of original NEF files before conversion to avoid data loss.
