About This Tool
A traceroute maps the path a packet takes across the internet to reach a destination, listing each router (hop) along the way and the time to each. It works by sending packets with increasing time-to-live values so that each hop in turn reports back, revealing the route one step at a time.
Traceroute is the tool for locating where a connection problem lies: a sudden jump in latency or a hop that stops responding points to the segment of the path causing trouble, whether that is your provider, an intermediate network, or the destination itself. It turns a vague this site is slow into a specific point on the route.
Some hops along a route deliberately do not reply to the probes traceroute uses, showing as gaps rather than problems, so a missing hop is not always a fault. What matters is where latency jumps or where the trace stops entirely, which points to the segment of the path worth investigating.
