About This Tool
This tool estimates how long an article takes to read from its word count and an average reading speed. The common benchmark for adult silent reading is roughly 200 to 250 words per minute, though it varies with difficulty and the reader.
Publishers show a reading-time estimate to set expectations and improve engagement, since readers are more likely to start an article when they know it is a five-minute read rather than an open-ended commitment. The tool lets you adjust the assumed speed, so you can tune the estimate for a technical audience that reads more slowly or a general one that reads faster.
Reading speed is not a fixed number: dense technical material or a second language slows a reader well below the general-audience benchmark, while light, familiar content is read faster. That is why a single global words-per-minute figure can mislead. Tuning the assumed speed to your actual audience, and remembering that images and code blocks change how a page is consumed, gives an estimate readers will find honest.
How to Use It
