This tool measures your typing speed in words per minute (WPM) and your accuracy as you type a supplied passage. By convention a word is counted as five characters, so WPM is the number of characters typed divided by five, divided by the time in minutes.
Accuracy is reported alongside speed because raw speed means little if it introduces errors: many tests report a net WPM that penalises mistakes. Regular practice raises both figures, and seeing them measured objectively helps you track progress rather than guessing whether you are getting faster.
Raw speed and net speed tell different stories: a fast typist who makes frequent errors may have a lower effective rate once corrections are counted, which is why accuracy is reported alongside words per minute.
