FLV Flash Video
FLV (Flash Video) is a container format developed by Adobe Systems for delivering video content over the internet. It became a standard format for web video in the 2000s, particularly with platforms like YouTube, due to its efficient streaming capabilities. However, with the discontinuation of Adobe Flash Player in 2020, FLV is now considered obsolete and not recommended for new projects.
FLV files typically contain video encoded with codecs like Sorenson Spark or H.264 and audio compressed with MP3 or AAC. The format's small file size and reasonable quality made it suitable for the era, but its reliance on Flash technology limits its usability today. As a result, many users opt to convert FLV files to more modern formats like MP4 or WebM.
FLV remains an important format for archival purposes, especially for historical video content. While it may be useful for preserving old video assets, it is not a viable option for contemporary use, where formats like MP4 offer better compatibility and features.
