What HEVC is
HEVC, High Efficiency Video Coding, also known as H.265, is a video compression standard published in 2013 by the same groups behind H.264. It was designed to roughly double compression efficiency, delivering the same quality at about half the bit rate of H.264.
HEVC achieves this with larger, more flexible coding blocks, more sophisticated motion prediction, and improved entropy coding. These gains made it central to 4K and high dynamic range video, where the sheer amount of data makes efficient compression essential, and it is the codec behind much modern high-resolution streaming and broadcast.
Strengths and limits
HEVC's efficiency is its defining strength: it halves the data needed for a given quality compared with H.264, which is what makes 4K streaming and storage practical.
Its major drawback is licensing. HEVC's patent situation is complex and costly, which slowed adoption on the open web and motivated royalty-free alternatives such as AV1. Encoding is also more demanding, and some older devices lack hardware decoding.
HEVC Development History
HEVC was developed by the Joint Collaborative Team on Video Coding (JCT-VC), a collaboration between ISO/IEC MPEG and ITU-T. The standard was finalized in 2013 to address the growing demand for higher resolution video formats, particularly 4K and beyond. Ensure your target audience's devices can handle HEVC before finalizing video formats.
When converting to or from HEVC, utilize tools that support hardware acceleration to speed up the encoding process. Pay attention to bitrate settings; while HEVC is efficient, overly aggressive compression can lead to artifacts. Additionally, test playback on various platforms to identify any issues with decoding.
