What Motion JPEG is
Motion JPEG, or MJPEG, is a video format in which each frame is compressed independently as a complete JPEG image. Instead of describing frames as differences from their neighbours, MJPEG stores every frame in full, as a sequence of still pictures played in quick succession.
This intra-frame approach is fundamentally different from codecs like H.264, which rely on inter-frame prediction. Because each frame stands alone, MJPEG is simple to encode and decode and easy to edit at any frame, which is why it appears in webcams, some cameras, and video-editing intermediates.
Strengths and limits
MJPEG's independent frames make it robust and edit-friendly: any frame can be accessed or cut without decoding others, and its low encoding complexity suits real-time capture in cameras and webcams.
It is far less efficient than inter-frame codecs, since it cannot exploit the similarity between frames, so files are large for their quality. For distribution and storage, a codec that compresses across frames is much more economical.
MJPEG Development History
MJPEG originated in the early 1990s as a solution for video capture and streaming. It was developed to utilize existing JPEG compression technology for video, allowing for straightforward integration into hardware and software systems. The format gained traction in consumer electronics, particularly in webcams and digital cameras, where real-time video processing was essential.

Using MJPEG Effectively
Choose MJPEG when low latency and ease of access to individual frames are critical. It is suitable for real-time applications such as video conferencing and surveillance. MJPEG is also advantageous when working with editing intermediates, as it allows for quick frame access without complex decoding processes. However, consider alternatives like H.264 for efficient storage in bandwidth-constrained environments.
When converting to or from MJPEG, be aware of potential quality loss due to repeated JPEG compression. Use high-quality settings to minimize artifacts. Compatibility can vary; ensure that the target platform supports MJPEG playback or editing. For web applications, test performance across different browsers, as MJPEG may not be supported uniformly. Keep in mind that file sizes can be large due to the lack of inter-frame compression.
