Its compression is far less efficient than later standards. The same quality that MPEG-2 delivers at a given bit rate can be matched by H.264 at roughly half the size, and by HEVC at less again, which is why streaming and modern storage have moved on. MPEG-2 persists mainly where legacy compatibility matters.
