What MPEG video is

MPEG is the family of video and audio compression standards from the Moving Picture Experts Group, the joint working group of ISO and IEC. The .mpeg and .mpg extensions usually hold video encoded with an early MPEG standard, most commonly MPEG-1 or MPEG-2.
