How PSD Works

PSD stands for Photoshop Document, the native format of Adobe Photoshop. A PSD can also hold more than plain pixels: editable text layers, embedded smart objects, paths, and high color depth. All of this makes PSD files considerably larger than a finished JPEG or PNG of the same image, since they store not just the final look but every ingredient used to build it.

History and Standardization

PSD has been the native format of Adobe Photoshop since the program's early years, and Photoshop first appeared in 1990. As Photoshop became the dominant image-editing application, PSD became the de facto working format for photographers, retouchers, and graphic designers, an entrenched standard within its field even though it began as one product's private format.

PSD is a proprietary Adobe format, but Adobe has published enough of its specification that other applications can read and write it with reasonable fidelity. To handle very large documents beyond the size limits of the original format, Adobe introduced the related PSB (Large Document Format), which shares the same design but supports much bigger dimensions. In everyday use, though, PSD remains the standard master format, with flattened copies exported for delivery.

PSD Compared to JPEG, PNG, and TIFF

Against JPEG and PNG, the difference is working file versus finished image. A PSD keeps all the layers, masks, and editability of the project, while JPEG and PNG are flattened, single-layer results meant for sharing and display. You edit in PSD and then export a JPEG or PNG at the end; converting a PSD to either of those formats collapses everything into one layer and discards the editing structure.

Against TIFF, the comparison is closer, because TIFF can also store layers and high bit depth and is sometimes used as an interchange or archival raster format. The practical distinction is that PSD is optimized for Photoshop's full feature set, whereas TIFF is a more widely supported, more neutral container. Some workflows archive to TIFF for openness, but designers usually keep the PSD as the true editable master.

The essential point is that PSD is a master, not a delivery format. It is large, tied most fully to Photoshop, and not something you would post to the web or send to someone expecting a simple image. Its value is entirely in preserving the editable ingredients of a design, which is exactly what a finished JPEG, PNG, or printed output cannot give back once flattened.
