HEIC High Efficiency Image Container
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is a modern image format developed by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG). This format employs HEVC compression, enabling stunning image quality at half the file size of traditional JPEG formats. It is the default image format for iOS since version 11 and supports advanced features like HDR and multiple image sequences.
HEIC files maintain a wide dynamic range and can also include transparency, making them suitable for high-quality photography and storage efficiency on Apple devices. However, their limited compatibility with non-Apple platforms can hinder sharing and accessibility, necessitating conversion to more universally accepted formats for broader usability.
As the digital landscape evolves, HEIC is gaining traction, and its efficient compression is paving the way for future image formats. However, its reliance on specific hardware and software limits its current adoption, particularly in web applications where SVG is preferred.[1]
