HEIC High Efficiency Image Container
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is an image format developed by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) and utilizes HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) compression to store images. Introduced by Apple as the default format for photos taken on iOS devices since version 11, it allows for smaller file sizes while maintaining high image quality.
This format supports advanced features such as HDR imaging, transparency, and image sequences, making it versatile for modern photography. However, HEIC’s compatibility is limited outside Apple’s ecosystem, often requiring conversion for broader sharing and use.
While HEIC is revolutionizing image storage with significantly smaller file sizes-often 50% smaller than JPEGs-it is recommended to convert to more widely supported formats like TIFF when quality, flexibility, and compatibility are paramount.[1]
