What Runs in a Browser, and What Does Not

The editor renders and rewrites the PDF on your device, so your document stays private. That sets a couple of honest limits worth knowing.

Works wellWhere the limits are
Adding text, shapes, images and signaturesEditing the original text is done by white-out and retype, not by changing the existing glyphs
Filling fields and adding checkmarksComplex scripted forms may not map every field
Reordering, rotating and deleting pagesVery large PDFs can be slow to render page by page
Private, on-device processing with no uploadNo OCR of scanned text and no cloud effects

Troubleshooting

Why can't I edit the existing text directly

A PDF stores text as positioned glyphs, not editable paragraphs, so changing it in place is not reliable in a browser. The dependable way is to white out the old text and type new wording on top, which this editor does in one flow.

A page will not render or looks blank

Some PDFs are encrypted or use unusual fonts. Try a copy that is not password protected. Scanned PDFs render as an image, so you can annotate them but there is no selectable text.

My placed item sits slightly off in the export

The editor maps screen positions to PDF points, which is very close but can differ by a hair on rotated pages. Nudge the item and export again if you need it exact.

The export is taking a while

Rendering and rewriting happen on your device, so a long or image-heavy PDF takes real time. Close other heavy tabs so the browser has memory to spare.

How it works

The PDF Editor operates directly in your browser without any uploads or accounts. Users can import a PDF file by dragging it into the interface. Once loaded, the tool allows for various modifications, including adding text, shapes, and images. Users can highlight sections, draw freehand, or place signatures. After editing, the tool processes changes in real-time and enables exporting the modified document as a new PDF file.

All edits are applied using in-browser rendering technologies. The tool leverages HTML5 Canvas for drawing and SVG for scalable graphics. Users can fill out forms interactively and manipulate pages by reordering, rotating, or deleting them. The final output is a fully functional PDF, ensuring compatibility across different PDF viewers while retaining the original file's integrity.

When to use it

Use the PDF Editor when you need to make quick changes to a document without installing software. For instance, if you receive a PDF contract that requires your signature, you can add it directly in the browser. Additionally, if you need to highlight key points in a report for a presentation, this tool allows you to do so efficiently, ensuring your edits are visible and clear.

Be cautious with complex layouts, as certain intricate designs may not render perfectly. When filling forms, ensure that all fields are correctly filled out before exporting. If you need to delete pages, double-check the order to avoid losing critical information. Always save a copy of the original PDF before making significant changes to safeguard against accidental data loss.
