PPS (PowerPoint Show) is a deck that opens directly in full-screen playback rather than the editing view. The extension is the only real difference from PPT: the bytes inside follow the same PowerPoint 97-2003 binary layout, and the suffix simply tells PowerPoint to start presenting immediately.

Nothing is removed to make a PPS. Slides, masters, embedded pictures, audio, video, notes, animations, and transitions are all present in the same records a PPT would carry. That is why the two extensions interchange so cleanly and why a rename alters presentation behaviour but never content.

The format spread as a way to mail finished decks to people who only needed to watch them, and it is still common in archives from the PowerPoint 97 through 2003 years. Its limitation is perception rather than capability: recipients assume a PPS cannot be edited.[1][2]
