What is RAW Image?

RAW is not a single format but a category of image formats that store unprocessed sensor data directly from a digital camera. RAW files contain all the data captured by the camera sensor before any in-camera processing.

Unlike JPEG which applies sharpening, noise reduction, and color processing automatically, RAW preserves every bit of sensor information giving photographers full control in post-processing.

What "Raw" Actually Means

Raw is not one file format but a category. A raw file holds the data captured directly by a camera's image sensor, before the camera has processed it into a finished photograph. When you shoot a JPEG, the camera reads the sensor and then immediately applies white balance, contrast, color, sharpening, and compression, and it throws the leftover data away. A raw file skips that step: it keeps the sensor's original readings so all of those decisions can be made later, on a computer, with full control and no loss.

The reason raw preserves so much comes down to how sensors work. Most sensors sit behind a Bayer color filter, so each pixel site records only one color, red, green, or blue. A raw file stores that single-color mosaic rather than a full-color image, and turning it into a normal photo requires demosaicing, a reconstruction step that interpolates the missing colors. Because raw defers this step to your software, you, not the camera, control how the image is built.

Raw files also carry more tonal information. They typically record 12 or 14 bits per channel instead of the 8 bits in a JPEG, which is why you can recover a blown-out sky or lift deep shadows from a raw file with little visible damage. Alongside the sensor data, a raw file usually bundles an embedded JPEG preview for quick viewing and a detailed block of metadata describing the camera, lens, and exposure.

The crucial catch is that a raw file is a digital negative, not a photograph. It cannot be posted, printed, or reliably viewed without being processed first. Raw is the starting point of an editing workflow, and the finished JPEG or TIFF you share is the developed result.

Why There Are So Many Raw Formats

Because raw data is tied to a specific sensor and camera design, almost every manufacturer has its own raw format. Canon uses CR2 and CR3, Nikon uses NEF, Sony uses ARW, Fujifilm uses RAF, and so on. They all express the same underlying idea, unprocessed sensor data plus metadata, but the internal layout, compression, and calibration details differ from brand to brand and often from model to model.

These formats are usually proprietary and undocumented. Support in third-party editors was historically built by reverse engineering, most famously through open tools that decoded many formats, which is why a brand-new camera's raw files sometimes cannot be opened until editing software ships an update for that specific model. The raw ecosystem depends heavily on this ongoing decoding work.

To counter that fragmentation, Adobe created DNG (Digital Negative), an openly published raw container meant to hold any camera's sensor data in a standardized, documented way. DNG became an ISO-recognized format and is widely used for archiving, but the major camera makers have largely kept their own proprietary raws, so the landscape remains a mix of many private formats and one open standard.

Raw Compared to JPEG

The choice between raw and JPEG is really a choice about when the image gets finished. JPEG is finished in the camera: small, instantly viewable, universally supported, but with its editing latitude already spent. Raw is finished later on your computer: much larger, unviewable until processed, but retaining the full sensor data and all the flexibility that higher bit depth and deferred demosaicing provide.

That flexibility is the whole reason to shoot raw. From a single raw file you can pull back highlights, open shadows, redo white balance as if you had set it at capture, and re-render the image years later with better software, none of which a baked JPEG allows without visible damage. The cost is storage space, an extra processing step, and the need for software that understands your camera's format.

The common workflow reflects this balance: capture in raw as the master, edit non-destructively, and export JPEGs only at the final step for sharing and printing. Raw is the negative you keep; JPEG is the print you hand out. For long-term storage, many photographers convert their proprietary raws to DNG so the negatives stay readable regardless of what happens to any one manufacturer's format.
