What is DNG (Digital Negative)?

DNG (Digital Negative) is Adobe's open standard for RAW image files. It was created to address the fragmentation problem caused by hundreds of proprietary camera RAW formats.

DNG is a universal RAW format that stores all the unprocessed sensor data of a camera RAW file in a standardized, future-proof container that any DNG-compatible software can read.

How DNG Works

DNG stands for Digital Negative, and it was created to solve a specific problem: every camera maker has its own proprietary raw format, and those formats are undocumented and change with each new model. DNG is a single, openly published raw container that can hold the sensor data from any camera in a consistent, well-specified way, so a photo saved as DNG does not depend on one manufacturer's private decoding to stay readable.

Structurally, DNG is built on the TIFF file format, the same foundation many camera raws use. Inside it holds the actual sensor data, usually the undemosaiced Bayer mosaic at its native bit depth, together with the calibration and color information a converter needs to render it correctly, an embedded preview image, and a full block of metadata. Because the format is documented, any compliant application knows exactly how to find and interpret each of those parts.

A DNG can be produced in two ways. A handful of cameras write DNG directly in-camera, but far more often a DNG is created by converting a proprietary raw such as a CR2 or NEF. The conversion repackages the same sensor data into the standardized container without discarding it, so the result keeps the full raw editing latitude, higher bit depth, deferred demosaicing, and wide tonal range, while shedding the dependence on manufacturer-specific software.

DNG also supports options the proprietary formats often do not expose cleanly. It can store the raw data with lossless compression to save space, embed the original proprietary raw file inside the DNG for safekeeping, and carry editing instructions and validation checksums. These features are why it is treated less as a camera output and more as a deliberate archival wrapper for raw images.

History and Standardization

DNG was introduced by Adobe in 2004 as a response to the proliferation of incompatible, undocumented camera raw formats. Rather than keep it proprietary, Adobe published the DNG specification openly and offered a free converter, positioning it as an industry-wide archival format rather than a product feature.

Its openness led to formal recognition: DNG was published as a public specification and later became the basis of an ISO standard for raw imagery. That standardization is central to its purpose, because a documented, vendor-neutral format is far more likely to remain readable decades from now than a private format tied to a single company's software and camera models.

Adoption is real but uneven. Several camera makers, along with many phone and drone cameras, write DNG natively, and archives and libraries favor it for long-term storage. The major camera manufacturers, however, have largely kept their own proprietary raws for their flagship lines, so in practice most photographers encounter DNG as a conversion target rather than as what their camera produces.

DNG Compared to Proprietary Raw

Against proprietary raws like CR2, NEF, and their kin, DNG's advantage is not image quality, the sensor data is the same, but openness and longevity. A DNG is documented and self-describing, so it does not risk becoming unreadable if a manufacturer abandons a format or an editor drops support for an old model. That makes it the safer choice for a photo library you intend to keep for the very long term.

The trade-offs are also real. Converting to DNG means leaving the camera maker's own software, which sometimes interprets proprietary settings, such as certain in-camera looks or lens corrections, more completely than third-party tools do. Some photographers also prefer to keep the untouched original raw straight from the camera on principle, treating conversion as an extra step that changes the file even if it preserves the data.

Compared with a finished JPEG, DNG is in a completely different category: it is a raw negative, larger and requiring processing before it can be viewed or shared, but retaining the full editing headroom of raw. In short, DNG competes with other raw formats on how the raw is stored, not with JPEG on whether to shoot raw at all.
