JPG, also known as JPEG, is a widely-used image format that utilizes lossy compression methods to significantly reduce file sizes, typically achieving a reduction of 90-95% with minimal visible quality loss. Established in 1992, JPG is the standard format for digital photography, making it universally compatible across devices and software.
The format supports 24-bit color depth, allowing for 16.7 million colors, making it ideal for complex images and photographs. However, its lossy nature means that data is permanently discarded during the compression process, leading to generation loss when images are repeatedly saved.
JPG's efficiency makes it perfect for sharing photos online, in emails, or on social media, but it does not support transparency and is less suitable for images requiring multiple edits or high-contrast text where artifacts may become noticeable.[1][2]
