JPG, or JPEG, is a widely-used image format standardized by the Joint Photographic Experts Group in 1992. It employs lossy compression techniques to significantly reduce file sizes while maintaining an acceptable level of visual quality. This makes JPG particularly suitable for photographs and images with complex color gradients.
The format allows for adjustable quality levels ranging from 1 to 100, providing flexibility in file size and image fidelity. Despite its advantages, JPG does not support transparency, making it less ideal for graphics that require clear backgrounds or layering.
JPG files are highly compatible across devices and software, making them the go-to format for digital photography, web images, and social media posts. However, repeated saving can lead to quality degradation due to the nature of lossy compression.[1][2]
